- Mechanism of Action (MOA)
- β-lactam: inhibits penicillin-binding proteins → blocks cell-wall synthesis (bactericidal).
- Black Box Warning
- Benzathine (and benzathine/procaine) IM products: NOT FOR INTRAVENOUS USE — inadvertent IV administration has caused cardiorespiratory arrest and death. Aqueous penicillin G potassium/sodium: none.
- Clinical Notes
- Drug of choice for syphilis (Treponema) and Group A strep. Narrow spectrum; anaphylaxis risk.
