Enhances GABA-A receptor chloride influx (↑ frequency of channel opening) → CNS depression.
Black Box Warning
Concomitant use with opioids → profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. Also carries risks of abuse, misuse, addiction, physical dependence, and withdrawal (FDA class update, 2020).
Clinical Notes
Status epilepticus, alcohol withdrawal, acute anxiety/agitation. No active metabolites (safer in liver disease). Dependence; reverse with flumazenil.
