Blocks β1, β2, and α1 receptors → ↓ heart rate/contractility plus vasodilation (↓ afterload).

Hypertensive emergencies and hypertension in pregnancy/preeclampsia (a first-line agent). IV for acute control; do not stop abruptly; contraindicated in bronchial asthma (β2 blockade).
