- Anticonvulsant with a CNS depressant effect; peripheral vasodilation. Exact mechanism not established (likely Ca²⁺/NMDA antagonism).
- Clinical Notes
- Labeled to prevent and control seizures in preeclampsia and eclampsia. Toxicity: deep tendon reflexes diminish then disappear -> respiratory paralysis; heart block may occur — keep an injectable calcium salt available.
